Profile:
Born in Lisbon, Portugal, Diego was born to a poor family, though their love of racing ran strong. His father was a former touring car racer, having had a small degree of success in the Portuguese national championship before giving up on his dream to raise his family. Diego was raised watching World GP on TV with his father, and after years of badgering his father he was given a kart for his 9th birthday.
Entering the cutthroat ranks of junior karting, Diego was instantly on the pace. Winning race after race and title after title, he quickly advanced up the ladder. Picking up a big name sponsor to fund his move up the ranks, he dominated the Portuguese Formula Rookie championship as a 13 year old, setting a record for most wins by a rookie and winning the title with a round to spare. After securing a backmarker seat for the EURO European Formula C Shield he again surprised his competitors by fighting his way to the rookie title and 3rd overall. Taking a risk and moving up to the World Ace Series by Scarlet as a 15 year old, his season was going well until his sponsor hit financial issues and pulled their backing. Without money he lost his seat, and despite his exemplary record none of the top junior programs swooped in to save him. And thus like his father before him, Diego was forced to give up his racing dreams to pursue a practical job.
Fast forward a few years and Diego had received a scholarship to a top engineering university, and began trying to work his way back into the racing world. Taking an internship with a Portuguese GT team, he diligently worked on building relationships up and down the pitlane. When one of the drivers on his team was injured, Diego got his chance. Sticking the car on pole, he went on to win his first GT race and opened the eyes of everyone in the paddock. Diego is hoping this standout performance will help revive his career, and will be aiming fulfill his dream of becoming a professional racing driver.
RP Notes:
- Shines when on camera. His good looks and charming nature make him a media favorite.
- Has a natural charm that makes him very easy to talk to, and very difficult to dislike.
- Always sees the good in everyone, even after a confrontation or collision.
- Has an inferiority complex. Having been looked down on his entire career, he naturally downplays his own achievements
- When not racing, he loves to help out with various tasks around the garage. Diego is just as comfortable working in the engineering department as he is behind the wheel
