Profile:
As a child there was nothing Alice loved more than sitting on her father’s lap as he drove the family Land Rover out to whatever excavation site her parents were headed to that day. Her French mother and Egyptian father had met at Cairo University where both were aspiring archeologists, fascinated by the ancient wonders of the Nile Delta. And thus much of Alice’s childhood was spent travelling around Egypt in that beat up Land Rover, itself as much a part of the family as she was. She loved helping her father perform maintenance, or helping to dig them out when they got stuck in the desert sands. It was of no surprise to her parents that Alice’s first car was a Land Rover of her own.
Almost as soon as Alice got her Land Rover she began to modify it. In the space of a few months almost every part had been upgraded or replaced, and it had become a very respectable Rally Raid vehicle. Alice would frequently take trips off the beaten path to places she had visited with her parents as a child, and as her trips grew more and more adventurous she began to hunger for more. The local Rally Raid club would provide Alice’s first foray into competitive rally, and the skills learned from her time spent poring over maps with her parents as a child would ensure Alice was in constant demand as a navigator. But it wasn’t long before she grew tired of just navigating, and began taking part in competitions as a driver. She wasn’t too shabby at driving either, and in combination with her skillful navigating Alice usually placed well. She had enjoyed her time with the club, but she would soon set her eyes on a more ambitious challenge.
Anyone familiar with Rally Raid has of course heard of the Paris-Dakar Rally. And while many members of the club harboured ambitions to compete in it’s new Middle Eastern guise, it was the original route that fascinated Alice. Perhaps it was her French heritage, or perhaps her desire for adventure. Whatever it was, Alice shocked her family and friends when she declared her intention to tackle the original route in her Land Rover.
Alice would spend the next 8 months preparing her Land Rover and meticulously mapping her route. In the spirit of the event she planned only to use the navigation notes she had prepared herself, though she promised her parents that she would bring a GPS tracker just in case. Her route would vary from the original slightly due to changes in the physical and political landscape since the event’s heyday, but for the most part she would be staying faithful to the event’s history.
While it may seem reckless to undertake a journey like this alone, Alice was very well prepared. She had planned her route meticulously, down to ensuring she would be passing enough small towns and fuel stations to restock her food, water, and fuel supplies, with plenty of margin for error. She had also planned a number of rest days to ensure both she and her vehicle could remain in top shape. Unfortunately for Alice however, it’s impossible to plan for mother nature.
Her long journey from Paris to Dakar would start well enough, and Alice found it to be mostly smooth sailing through Europe and Northern Africa. In fact her trip would go almost perfectly until she hit Mauritania, where a mere 3 days from Dakar she would wake in the middle of the night to the sound of torrential rains. The resulting rivers and mudslides would dramatically wash out roads and dramatically alter the terrain, rendering Alice’s navigation notes mostly useless. Alice boldly (or recklessly, from the perspective of anyone else) chose to press on with her journey regardless, but she would quickly find herself lost. It was only after driving seemingly in circles for a day and a half, having nearly depleted her emergency fuel and water, that Alice remembered the GPS her parents had forced her to bring. It would shine a grim light on her situation: her navigation errors had put her in the middle of Mauritania, nearly 200km off course. To make matters worse, the closest marked town was well outside her fuel range. But at least she had a target now, and Alice managed to coax her Land Rover to within 35km of the town before it finally sputtered to a halt. Alice was forced to make a choice. Hole up in the vehicle and hope someone would discover her in the middle of nowhere, or make the arduous trek through the desert. It would end up being an easy decision, with only two days of water left staying put was simply too much of a risk.
35km may not sound like a huge distance, but with the heat of the day forcing Alice to limit her travel hours to the morning and evening, and the difficult terrain further hindering her progress, it would be difficult to reach her destination before running out of water. She had an emergency flare, but it would be useless unless she could get close enough to the town for someone to see. The terrain would limit her progress far more than Alice expected, and after two days the GPS indicated she was still more than 15km from the town. Fatigue and dehydration would take their toll on the third day, and when she collapsed to rest under a tree she had failed to cover even 5km. When Alice woke on the 4th morning it was all she could do to raise her head, and she knew she could go no further. She could barely muster the strength to set off the flare, and her final thought before she drifted back into unconsciousness was that her parents would probably be mad at her for taking so many risks.
It was a very sheepish Alice who called her parents from the hospital of that small Mauritanian town to explain why she had yet to arrive at their meeting place in Dakar. Thankfully Alice had suffered no serious side effects from her dehydration, and after recovering her vehicle she would finally arrive at the finish line to greet her tearful parents. While not the triumphant conclusion she had imagined, her trials and tribulations had done nothing to diminish Alice’s adventurous spirit, much to her parent’s dismay. As she stared out the window of the plane on her flight home Alice was already planning her next adventure.
Alice’s story would earn her a few headlines, which would catch the eye of a fellow Egyptian driver who invited Alice to test a GT car. Alice was unsure she was comfortable trying something so far out of her comfort zone but her parents encouraged her to give it a shot, perhaps hoping circuit racing would be a slightly less dangerous pastime for their daughter than Rally Raid. The sheer speed of the GT car was overwhelming for Alice at first, but the more laps she put in the more she started to enjoy the sensation. It was very different to the thrill of Rally Raid, but when Alice came into the pits after her first run she found that she couldn’t wipe the smile off her face. It was very different to Rally Raid, yes. But it was a good kind of different. The kind Alice could definitely see herself getting addicted to. Besides, it’s not like she had to choose between the two, right?
After competing in a few club races at home in Egypt and placing rather well, Alice has caught the circuit racing bug for good. But with so few opportunities to grow in the local scene Alice has set her sights on unknown shores and a professional debut. Any potential team principal will have to be patient with her as she learns the ins and outs of circuit racing, but once she does, look out: as her parents could tell you, nothing can stop Alice once she sets her mind to it.
RP Notes:
- Fluent in both Standard Arabic and the local Egyptian dialect, as well as French and English. Though when speaking the latter two she is self conscious of her accent
- She restores and modifies Land Rovers as a hobby. She still dailies her Paris-Dakar Land Rover when at home in Egypt
- Not particularly interested in romance, she doesn’t think she’ll ever meet someone she likes more than she likes Land Rovers
- Her near death experience doesn’t seem to have had any affect on her mentally, she’s as confident and headstrong as ever
- The type of person that’s so sure of their own ability that they don’t realize they’ve got themselves in trouble until it’s too late
- Extremely self motivating, the moment Alice achieves her goal she moves on to something even more ambitious
