Allstar Racing Christmas Special: Part 1
This post is from Aaron's POV
It was a stormy winter’s day, the wind howled outside as rain lashed against the window panes. I wasn’t paying any attention to that however, because SHE was standing in front of the fireplace smiling at me. Wearing nothing but a Santa hat and matching lingerie, Sara Hockenheim swayed her hips seductively as she made her way over to me. Sitting down on my lap, she wrapped her arms around my neck and moved her face close to mine. I could smell her perfume, feel the warmth of her body on mine as she whispered in my ear “Have you been a good boy this year? I think I already know what you want for Christmas” She giggled as she slowly moved her lips toward mine. My heart was beating a million miles a minute. Just a little closer…
“EARTH TO AARON! Hellooooo~!” Suddenly the world collapsed around me, and I found myself standing on the streets of Paris. Weiss was looking worried, while Taiga pouted at me and crossed her arms. “Hmph. Are we so boring that you fell asleep?” Taiga stuck her tongue out at me. What, is she in elementary school or something? “Uh, sorry. Just zoned out for a bit, what were we talking about?” I scratched my head and tried to anchor myself in reality. Just forget about it Aaron. Hah, as if I could forget a dream like that. Weiss spoke up. “Um, we were wondering if Jim would dress up as Santa for the team Christmas party.” We all stopped to picture it for a moment, then burst into laughter. Taiga was the first to regain composure. “So after we realized that wasn’t going to work, we started talking about who could do it. Weiss was mentioning that Sara had done it once when she was a kid, that’s when you sort of spaced out.” A look of realization dawned on Taiga’s face, and there was a twinkle in her eye that made my blood run cold. “Hey now, thinking thoughts like that will get you on the naughty list. Although maybe you were hoping for a little punishment?” She grinned at me, and I realized once again how well her nickname suits her. I shuddered. “Can we stop it there. Please?” “Sure. Hey these bags are getting heavy, you should carry them for me” Her face wore a smile, but her eyes said ‘I could always tell Weiss what you were dreaming about…’ I grabbed the bags. “I should have known you only called me here to carry your stuff. Why Paris, anyways?” “Because it’s Paris! At Christmas time! What other reasons do you need?” Taiga spread her arms and spun in a circle as though to emphasize her point. True, it was certainly beautiful. But I had to catch the red-eye from Japan, and we were only here for a day before heading back for J-SA GT Masters. Why couldn’t we have done Tokyo or something?
I suppose I should explain why we’re shopping in the first place. Garnette complained to Jim that we had no holiday spirit, so she organised a team Christmas party. Andreas, Taiga and I set up a secret santa gift exchange, and Weiss and the others helped put up lights and decorations. So now, having put off buying gifts until the last minute, Taiga called me up after my race at Okayama and told me to get to Paris pronto to help her and Weiss shop. And so here I am standing in the streets of Paris carrying a bunch of bags containing many things for Taiga, but not the secret santa gift she was supposed to be buying.
Weiss turned to Taiga “Um, so have you decided what you’re going to get Andreas yet?” Taiga sighed in frustration. “No, I haven’t. What am I supposed to get him, he’s so rich he can already buy anything he wants!” I shrugged. “What do you get the man who has everything? Something he can’t buy, of course. He’d probably really appreciate something homemade, like one of your paintings. On that note, I still can’t believe the feisty and energetic Taiga Fujiwara turns into a super serious artist when she’s stressed. Talk about out of character.” “And I still can’t believe you have a thing for Weiss’s mom” Taiga grumbled quietly enough that only she and I could hear. She pondered for a moment before turning to me and beaming. “A painting, huh? That’s actually a really good idea. See this is why I brought you, you think outside the box! So how about you Weiss? Got anything for Natascha yet?” Weiss smiled and lifted one of her shopping bags. “Yeah, I got her a cute purse. I hope she likes it.” “Should have got her a ‘Welcome to the GRL’ handbook. Just to cover the simple stuff, you know? Pezzarinho is a British word that means fast, Andreas and Kayin are actually dudes, never give Amy an energy drink. That kind of thing.” I smiled and patted her on the head. “I’m kidding, I’m sure she’ll love the purse.” Taiga suddenly struck a pose. “You’ve already got a gift for Garnette haven’t you Aaron? That means we’re done shopping, so it’s time to sight-see! Come on guys, we’ve only got 12 hours before we have to be at the airport. Let’s see as much of Paris as we can!”
Meanwhile, at a garage near Allstar Racing HQ…
Akiha stepped back to admire her work. Perfection, if she did say so herself. She’d done some fast builds before, but this one pushed her to her limits. Still, it was all going to be worth it to see the reaction. A devious grin spread across Akiha’s face. Now it was time to put her plan into action.

The Maid Girl Andreas leaned against the motorhome and took a drink from his water bottle. He had just finished jogging the track with Aaron and Taiga, and was enjoying watching the sun set over the horizon as he cooled down. Road America was a similar track to Fuji so should be a decent hunting ground for the Porsche, and after taking his first career podium last time out Andreas was riding a wave of confidence. After finishing his stretches he grabbed his bag and was just starting to make his way back to the hotel when an unusual sight caught his eye. Lynette Adelaide was wandering dejectedly past the garage, her usual dainty smile replaced by a sorrowful frown, her beautiful blue eyes turned red from crying. Despite her uncharacteristically disheveled appearance Andreas couldn’t help but admire her beauty. He sighed. He hated to see her like this, but it’s not like there was anything he could do, right? As he grabbed his bag to go, Andreas felt a hand on his shoulder. “So you’ve got your eye on Lynette eh?” Aaron grinned as Andreas sighed in frustration. “Actually, that makes a whole lot of sense now that I think about it. Isn’t the young aristocrat falling for the maid girl a bit cliche though?” Andreas glared at Aaron. “I’m just teasing you man. She looks a little down, why don’t you go cheer her up? Maybe you could ask her for the special service” Aaron wiggled his eyebrows suggestively. Andreas would have liked nothing more than to punch Aaron in the face, but he just managed to restrain himself. “And you wonder why Natascha still isn’t comfortable around us. You and Taiga are too much sometimes.” Aaron held up his arms “Okay, point taken. Seriously though, Glover announced he’s shutting down Starion Motorsports and Lynette is taking it really badly. She seems to be blaming the whole thing on herself, it’s painful to see her self destructing like this. I was going to go talk to her but seeing as she’s caught your eye I think things might go better if I leave it to you. It’s about time you got yourself a girl anyway!” Andreas frowned. “I would like to but… This sort of thing requires a delicate touch, I’m not sure what to say. It seems wrong to intrude on her.” “I dunno, maybe she needs someone to lean on. You’re not going to be able to totally change her mood, but if you can take her mind off it for even a couple minutes I’d call that a success. Just be yourself, you’ll be fine.” Aaron patted him on the back. “Good luck, man.” As Andreas approached Lynette he felt himself slowly being overcome by nervousness. His usual composure gone, he felt sweat run down his back as he frantically tried to think of an appropriate greeting. Andreas was so nervous that if someone were to approach him and offer the choice of talking to Lynette or engaging a polar bear in bloody mortal combat, he would be on his way to the arctic before they could say “Hey, it was a joke man.” Before Andreas had a chance to call out to her, Lynette noticed his approach and turned towards him. Forcing a smile, she curtsied before greeting him. “Good evening Mr. Brunestud sir. How may I help you?” “I, uh..” As Andreas struggled to formulate a response, Lynette noticed the gym bag in his hand. “I apologize, was I interrupting you? Perhaps you were on your way to an appointment?” Andreas shook his head. “Nothing that serious, I just finished my run and I’m heading back to my hotel.” Lynette’s eyes lit up. “My pride as a maid will not allow me to stand by while you carry a burden. Please allow me to carry your bag for you.” Before Andreas had time to respond, Lynette was reaching for the bag in his hand. While it may hurt Lynette’s pride to see him carry the bag, it would hurt Andreas’s pride as a man just as much to have her carry it for him. Instinctively he pulled the bag away. As he did the smile faded from Lynette’s face, and she bowed her head. The two of them stood perfectly still for a few moments, Andreas realizing he had just made a huge mistake as Lynette stood staring at the ground. “I’m sorry Lynette. I didn’t..” Andreas tailed off as he noticed tears falling from Lynette’s face. They stood in the middle of the paddock, Lynette staring at the ground, her shoulders shaking as she tried to restrain her tears. Andreas felt himself turn red with shame. He was supposed to be comforting her, and he had just made things worse. Even Aaron couldn’t have screwed up this badly. As he scanned the paddock to see if there were any witnesses, he noticed Aaron had worked his way to the other side of the road behind Lynette, and was making some strange movements with his arms, as though he were trying to grab something. Andreas cocked an eyebrow, and Aaron renewed the motions with extra vigour. Eventually giving up, Aaron pulled out his phone. A few seconds later Andreas’s phone vibrated, and he opened the text. “Give her a hug you idiot”. Andreas glanced at Lynette, who was still standing rooted in place. The tears were now flowing freely down her face, accompanied by heaving sobs. Lynette looked up and caught his eye for a moment, which only caused her to cry even harder. “Give her a hug you idiot”, the words of Aaron’s text echoed in his head. Well at this point it could hardly make things worse. Andreas stepped forward and wrapped his arms around Lynette, embracing her tightly. She immediately stiffened. “Um… Mr Brunestud, sir?” Lynette clearly hadn’t fully processed the situation. Andreas just held her tight. “It’s okay Lynette, I’m here for you. You can let it out.” Lynette nodded faintly, and buried her head in his chest. They stood that way for what seemed like forever, Andreas supporting her as she cried in his arms. Finally, the tears ran dry. Lynette looked up at Andreas. “Th-thank you. *sniff* I’m okay now, sir.” Andreas reluctantly released his hold on her. “I’m glad to hear it. And please, you don’t have to be so formal. Call me Andreas.” Lynette nodded faintly, then fixed her eyes hopefully on Andreas’s discarded gym bag. “M-may I?” Andreas handed the bag to her. “Thank you Lynette. Shall we go?” As they walked past the Allstar Racing hauler towards the circuit exit, Aaron gave Andreas a subtle thumbs up. Pulling out his phone, he dialed a number. “Hey Taiga? Yeah, you’re never going to believe what just happened. Remember our bet about finding out Andreas’s crush? Well, you owe me a beer.” The walk to the parking lot was entirely silent, with Andreas and Lynette furtively sneaking glances at each other, turning away rapidly when they made eye contact. When they arrived at his car, Lynette handed Andreas his bag with a curtsy and a soft smile that lit up her face. “Your bag, Mr. Brunestud, sir.” Andreas gave a half bow in response. “Thank you Lynette. Have a good evening.” Lynette curtsied again before leaving for her own car. As Andreas was about to open the door, Lynette turned around. “Thank you Mr Brunest-- um, Andreas.” She blushed heavily. “I… would be happy to serve you again, if you so desired." She curtsied. "Goodnight.” Andreas felt his heart skip a beat as his face flushed red. He watched as Lynette headed to her car and left the lot. Getting into his own car, he sat for a few moments collecting his thoughts. His phone vibrated again: “Atta guy, I knew you had it in you. Meet the rest of us at the hotel in 30, Taiga’s buying dinner. -Aaron”. A wry smile graced Andreas’s lips. Hopefully this was less awkward than the last time Taiga had taken them out to dinner. Thanks B.K Glover for allowing me to use Lynette, and Meiko for making sure I did the character justice

Allstar Racing HQ, 1 week after the Brightest Night 6 hours
Weiss headed up the stairs to Jim’s office. It was time for her post-season debrief, and she was feeling nervous. Her season hadn’t lived up to expectations, with only a single CSGP win at Road America and a handful of pole positions to show for the very expensive driver training program the team had paid for her to take last season. And while Weiss knew that misfortune had played a large role, her inability to convert her qualifying speed into victories was playing on her mind. That said, she was confident she had done enough to prove she belonged among the elite drivers in the league. None of that was the reason Weiss felt nervous however. Jim had been awfully quiet about his plans for the team’s 3rd season, and she was worried that the poor end to the season would cause Jim to scale back her program. Her appointment wasn’t for another 20 minutes, so Weiss decided to head to the break room to clear her mind. As she opened the door Aaron and Taiga burst out of Jim’s office, seemingly in the midst of a heated argument.
“I vouched for you! Jim’s exact words were ‘You better not wreck the car.’ And what did you do? You crashed! And now I’m in shit because you got a little excited and put the car in the wall!”
“It wasn’t my fault, it was a brake failure!”
Aaron rolled his eyes. “A failure to hit the brakes maybe. Ugh, I can’t believe you. At least take responsibility for your actions.”
Taiga pouted. “You’re so mean. Instead of backing me up you’re taking Jim’s side? Hmph.”
“Oh great, now you’re acting like a child.”
“You take that back!”
They didn’t even acknowledge Weiss as they passed her, and she could hear the argument continue as they made their way down the stairs. As the sound of their conversation faded, Andreas stepped out of the break room. “Those two are certainly getting along well these days.”
Weiss frowned. “R-really? It looked like they were fighting to me.”
“They were, but neither of them looked too upset to me. That seemed more like playful banter.”
“Do you think they like each other?” Weiss asked.
“I wonder…” Andreas replied. “If they haven’t realized it yet, it’s only a matter of time.”
He turned back into the break room. “Here for your meeting? Can I get you a coffee while you wait?”
“Um, yes please.” Weiss sat on one of the couches across from Natascha. The older girl looked up from her book and gave a small wave. “Good afternoon Weiss.”
“Hello Natascha. Reading anything interesting?”
Natascha’s face lit up. “Yes, actually. Garnette loaned me one of her textbooks, and it’s fascinating. I’m reading about the Torsen differential Audi used for their IMAS GTO Quattro and…” Weiss accepted her coffee from Andreas as Natascha launched into a spirited monologue on the benefits and drawbacks to a Torsen diff. Natascha had fit in right away with the engineers, and her interest in racing technology had led to a quick friendship with Garnette.
Noticing that her audience had lost interest, Natascha brought her talk to an end. “So, um, what were you two talking about earlier? You seemed quite interested in something out in the hallway.”
“Ah, Aaron and Taiga were in a shouting match after leaving the office.”
Weiss nodded. “And Andreas thinks they might like each other.”
Andreas scratched his head. “Well, I’m certain Taiga has her eye on Aaron. I’m just not sure if it’s mutual.”
Weiss smiled. “I think they be really cute together!”
Andreas glanced as her in surprise. That was an unusually energetic response for Weiss. He chuckled to himself. It was easy to forget given her serious attitude, but Weiss was still a teenage girl. Of course she would be excited by the idea of her teammates dating.
Her enthusiasm had clearly caught Weiss off-guard as well, as she quickly attempted to pass off the spotlight. “U-um, what about you Natascha? Do you think they’d make a good pair?”
Seemingly caught by surprise, Natascha stared vacantly at her textbook. After she hadn’t moved for about 30 seconds, Weiss shot Andreas a confused glance. He shrugged, and gently shook her by the shoulder.
Natascha jumped. “Ah! S-sorry about that.”
Andreas smiled softly. “It’s alright. We had just asked you what you thought about Aaron and Taiga as a couple.”
“Ah! Uh, umm....” Natascha trailed off, before staring vacantly at her book once again. After it became clear she wasn’t going to respond Weiss and Andreas exchanged bemused glances, before gently shaking her again.
Natascha’s eyes refocused as she snapped out of her trance. “H-huh? Um, what were we talking about?”
Andreas decided it was best to drop the subject. “Weiss has her end of season interview with Jim, we were talking about that.”
Natascha nodded. “I have mine tomorrow, I’m really nervous. Be sure to tell us how it goes.”
“Of course.” Weiss looked at the clock. “I have to go now. See you later.”
“Come in, Weiss.” Jim looked up from the paperwork on his desk and motioned Weiss to sit in an empty chair. Chatting with Andreas and Natascha had calmed her nerves, but Weiss was still apprehensive about the interview.
Jim put down the papers he was reading. “Alright, let’s get down to business. I’m going to keep this short, because I know that you’re your own harshest critic, and you don’t need me to tell you that you had a rough season. And while you may not have been perfect the car certainly let you down a few times as well, for which I apologize. I think it’s fair to say that the season didn’t go how either of us was hoping.”
Jim adjusted his glasses, while Weiss stayed silent. “Having said that, I thought you dealt with adversity very well this season. There were plenty of chances for you to lose your cool, but you stayed composed and gave it your all no matter how poorly the weekend was going. Your victory at Road America was superb, an excellent bounceback after being robbed of a win at Fuji. That alone was enough to convince me that you are an integral part of the team going forward, assuming you wish to remain here that is.” He gave a self-deriding laugh. “We haven’t exactly delivered a car worthy of your talents, have we? Anyway, that concludes the ‘review’ portion of the meeting, would you like to make any comments?”
Weiss shook her head. “I’m happy racing here. But, um… have you been avoiding us since the end of the season? None of the drivers have been able to talk to you recently, not even Aaron. Is there some sort of problem?”
Jim heaved a heavy sigh. “I apologize for that, it’s been a stressful few weeks. I will say that whatever rumors you may have heard about the team being short on funds are false, though we are looking at downscaling. When we expanded into the GRL I had to bring in shareholders to fund the team, and our lack of results last season created a lot of friction between me and them. They feel we overextended ourselves, and that our results suffered because of it. So we’ll be consolidating our efforts on a couple of series this season.” He sighed again. “It’s probably my fault for getting their hopes up. After your win at Suzuka and our pace early in the season we started expecting too much of ourselves, and suddenly a podium was a disappointing result. We should have been happy to be in the fight at all, we made a huge step up from our first season. ...I apologize for going off on a rant. This isn’t something you should have to deal with.”
Weiss was concerned. She’d always thought of Jim as someone who could never be shaken, but the Jim in front of her looked as though he’d had a lot of late nights.
“Anyways, that’s none of your concern. I do need your help with something though.” He looked at Weiss over his glasses. “I’d like to get your opinion on what series you’d like to run this season. For a driver of your calibre we’d be looking at the Jade Sebringson Memorial Trophy, or the GT Endurance Pro class of the Global Endurance Masters. I’ll be taking everyone’s opinion into account, but as our star driver yours will carry some extra weight. Take some time to mull it over, and then let me know what you’ve decided.”
Weiss nodded. “Thank you, I’ll think about it.”
“Please do. While we have a time before the season starts, I’d rather not be rushing to order cars at the last minute. That will be all for now, Weiss. I’d like everyone to take a few weeks to relax before we start preparing for next season. Enjoy your time off.”

Mutiny Garage, Allstar Racing HQAaron had been fuming since he left Jim’s office. Weiss was right: Jim had changed, and not in a good way. It was as though the trials and tribulations of season 2 had left him utterly defeated. The team may have been demoralized after the brutal luck that had robbed them of at least a couple wins, but that was no reason to give up! If anything it should have been pushing them to come back stronger. Instead, well… “I won a race. I won a fucking race and he’s still axing the tuner program!” Aaron let out a roar of frustration as he slammed the door to the garage. An amused chuckle caused him to turn around. “So, you heard the news then.” Akiha stepped out of the shadows with a particularly disdainful scowl on her face. “I’m disappointed. I never thought Jim would give up when the going got tough.” Aaron sighed. “Yeah, me neither. I don’t think he’s going to change his mind either.” “So you’re just going to let him shut the program down?” Akiha asked with a frown. “Actually…” Aaron trailed off, deep in thought. “I probably shouldn’t tell you this, but whatever. I was doing some end of season finance stuff and I came across the account balance. We’re fucking loaded. Hell, we could run a works prototype program if we wanted to. There’s absolutely no reason for us to be cutting back on our entries. So no, I’m not going to stand idly by and watch him drag us down.” Akiha’s eyes lit up. “Oh? I take it you have a plan then?” Aaron glanced around. “This probably isn’t the best place to talk. Let’s go grab a coffee, I’ll explain things there.” Insert scene transition sound effect here Later, at a cafe near Allstar HQAfter ordering a couple coffees Aaron and Akiha grabbed a table by the window. “Right, let’s get down to business. I wouldn’t call what I have a ‘plan’, but I’ve come up with a vague idea of how I’m going to handle this. In short: Jim isn’t going to know anything about it until it’s too late to stop me. Or us, if you decide to join me.” Akiha grinned mischievously. “A mutiny on the good ship Allstar, huh? Count me in.” Aaron raised his eyebrows. “I haven’t even got to the details yet, but alright. Anyway, as I was saying, we have more than enough finances to run a Tuner program so I’m planning to upgrade my S15 to ‘Modified All-stars’ spec and run in the Haruna Tsuchigami Farewell Tour. Garnette’s been assigned to Natascha, so I’m in need of an engineer.” Aaron took a long drink of coffee. “Which is where you come in. That is, unless you’re going to be participating yourself? That project of yours is coming along nicely.” “You’ll have to wait and see.” Akiha playfully avoided answering the question. “But having a support team at the circuit would be of benefit to me if I decided to run as well, so it should work out for both of us.” “Excellent, that’s settled then. We’ll just have to figure out how to run a race team as we go. But it’s hardly a team if there’s just one driver, is it?” Akiha’s eyes flashed with ambition. “Indeed. We need to pick up at least one more driver to show Jim we mean business. Who do you think would be a good fit for a breakaway team like ours?” After a moment of deliberation, they turned to each other and nodded. “Janet Evans.” Aaron laughed. “Yeah, there really is only one choice isn’t there? She’s fast, brave, and used to working with a small team. Plus I used to race against her in Time Attack, we get along pretty well. I’ll give her a call and hope she hasn’t been picked up by someone else already.” Akiha sipped her coffee. “I just have one question, something you haven’t been very clear on: Are we remaining part of Allstar Racing, or is this the start of something new?” Aaron shrugged. “I’m not sure yet, I guess we’ll see how the next few weeks go. There are pros and cons to both sides so we’ll have to weigh our options. I’ve got some calls to make so let’s call it a day. Glad to have you on board, we’ll talk more tomorrow.” Finishing her coffee, Akiha smiled to herself. She couldn’t wait to see the look on Jim’s face.

Kansai International Airport, Japan Weiss stood waiting outside the airport terminal. Taiga had invited all the Allstar drivers to spend some time at her place in Fukui over the break, and Aaron and Weiss had decided to take her up on the offer. It would have been more fun with everyone, but Natascha was back home visiting family and Andreas had been dragged away by his sister for a formal event at the last minute. Aaron had come to Japan a few days early to take care of some business at the tuner village, and he was going to pick Weiss up from the airport on the way to Fukui. Or at least he was supposed to, Weiss had been waiting for at least 10 minutes now. Just as she reached for her phone, a white sedan pulled up beside her on the curb.
“Sorry to keep you waiting Weiss, traffic was brutal. Akiha warned me it would be bad but I had no idea it would be that bad. Here, let me grab your bags.” Aaron loaded the car, and they pulled out of the airport. “It’s a 3 hour trip, so get comfortable. Thankfully this is one of Akiha’s more tame cars, so it should be alright for a road trip.”
They cruised down the highway, with the windows down and the radio playing softly. Aaron had one arm resting on the door, and his hair was ruffled by the wind. What caught Weiss’s eye though was the look on his face. His brow was furrowed as though he was in deep thought, and his mouth was twisted into a frown. After about 20 minutes of driving in silence, Weiss decided to speak up. “Um… is something wrong Aaron? You’re really quiet today, and I haven’t seen you around HQ recently.”
Aaron shook his head. “No, I’ve just been busy. Sorry if I haven’t been around much.”
“Oh.” The abrupt answer was so unlike Aaron that Weiss knew right away he was hiding something. But with how firmly he’d denied it she wasn’t sure it was something she should bring up again. The ride continued in silence for an hour or so, until Aaron pulled off the highway and found a restaurant.
“This place is really good, Andreas and I stopped here a few times last season.” After placing their order, Aaron and Weiss sat in silence for a few minutes. Aaron gazed out the window at nothing in particular, and Weiss shot him a concerned glance. There was definitely something wrong. As their order arrived and Aaron began eating, Weiss just poked at her food. Aaron sighed as he looked up at her. “It’s pretty clear you’ve got something to say to me. You’ve been giving me a funny look every time you think I’m not paying attention. What’s wrong?”
Weiss paused for a moment. It would be easy to just say “nothing” and wait until she could ask Taiga. But Weiss wasn’t sure she could stand another 2 hours in the car with Aaron like this.
“Ah, um… that’s what I wanted to ask you. You look like you’re thinking really hard about something, and have this nasty scowl on your face sometimes.” Weiss looked down in her lap. “If Taiga or I did something to make you angry you didn’t have to force yourself to hang out with us.”
Aaron heaved a heavy sigh and shook his head. “No, it’s got nothing to do with you guys. Believe me, I need this week away from everything to relax and blow off some steam. It’s just… really hard to let go of things.” He signalled the waiter for the bill. “Come on, we’ll talk about it in the car since you want to know so bad.”
As they pulled back onto the highway, Aaron began to talk. “So you’ve probably noticed the changes going on back at HQ. I’m sure Jim’s told you what you’ll be racing next year, but what he hasn’t told you is that program will likely be the only series the team runs next year. Andreas and I knew the Am program was coming to an end, that wasn’t a surprise or anything. Andreas has already found a ride and he’ll be back in familiar colours, just not ours. What I didn’t see coming was Jim cancelling the tuner program. I mean, we almost won the whole thing. So… I tried convincing him to change his mind. It didn’t go well, things got heated, and I haven’t talked to him in over a month now. I’m not putting all the blame on him, I certainly could have handled things better. I just… let my emotions get the better of me, and I’ve been avoiding HQ ever since.”
Weiss frowned. That explained why Aaron hadn’t been around much.
“I guess I can see where Jim is coming from. Kaido racing isn’t regarded too highly by a lot of people both in and out of the industry. He’s had a few sponsors back out on him because they didn’t want to be associated with street racing and the negative press that it attracts, and he had a hell of a time convincing IMAS that Allstar Racing was a serious team capable of running in a top tier series like LightningCar. And if that was it, I could see why ditching the Kaido program would make sense. But you have to look at both sides of the coin. Running in Kaido gained us a huge amount of fans in Japan, despite being relative unknowns heading into the season we ended as one of the more popular teams. Our interest from Japanese sponsors is through the roof, and almost 70% of our merchandise sales are to Japan and Southeast Asia. Those numbers aren’t near as high if we don’t enter kaido. But Jim refuses to see that, in his mind the negatives outweigh the positives enough to justify dropping it.”
No wonder Aaron was stressed, Weiss thought to herself. Not only did it look like the tuner program was going to be cancelled, but he’d had a fight with Jim as well. He’d fought even though he knew he couldn’t win, and now he may have burned his bridges at the team. “Um, if you’re not doing tuner or GT Am then does Jim have other plans for you?”
Aaron laughed ruefully. “Puts me in a tough spot doesn’t it? GT Pro and LightningCar are well beyond my abilities, and Jim is under a lot of pressure to stay out of the lower tier stuff. It doesn’t look good for us if we lose, and it doesn’t look good for the organizers if we come in and dominate what’s supposed to be an entry level series. So there isn’t really anywhere for me to race next season. Not with Allstar Racing anyway.”
Weiss frowned. “S-so, does that mean you’re leaving?”
“I don’t know. I was hoping I could change Jim’s mind, but after the way things went last time we talked... that’s not gonna happen. I love the team and I want to stick around, but I feel like I’m getting pushed out. Part of me realizes that I’ve reached my peak, and that I’m not going to get much better than this. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to step back to a management role and help you guys achieve your dreams. After all, Jim is expecting me to back down so I’m sure he’d welcome me with open arms. But I’m a racer. I don’t want to spend a year on the sidelines. I… don’t know what I’m going to do.”
“Oh.” The conversation trailed off awkwardly, and Aaron turned his attention back to the road while Weiss resumed staring out the window. They drove in silence for a few minutes.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to drag down the mood. This has really been weighing on my mind, but I thought I was hiding it pretty well.” Aaron gave a wry smile. “Guess not, huh? It’s kind of liberating to finally tell someone else.”
“You don’t have to hide this stuff Aaron. I-I’m your friend okay? So you can talk to me about things like this.” Weiss quickly glanced away.
Aaron smiled. “Thanks Weiss. That… means a lot to me. I’ve been so stressed lately I just retreated into my shell. Funny how sometimes you can’t see when somebody is right in front of you wanting to help.”
While the drive was still mostly in silence, the atmosphere in the car was noticeably more positive.
“You should race!” Weiss’s abrupt declaration broke the silence. Aaron looked over at her in surprise and she blushed. “I-I mean, you’re a racer, right? Even if you have to leave the team, I think you’ll regret it if you don’t.”
“...Yeah, you’re probably right. I think I already knew what I wanted to do, but couldn’t bring myself to commit to it.” The two exchanged a smile. “Thanks for being a friend, Weiss.”
“...How long until we get there?”
“Uh… 2 hours to go, if the traffic is good”
“We should have taken the train, huh?”
“Yeah…”
