The following is a translated transcript of a radio show interview from an Osakan radio station.
Daisuke: Bonjoooour~! Good morning~! Buenos dias~! Ohayoooo~! Dai back transmitting through the Osaka airwaves once again through to your speakers for our Daily Dropkick! WA-POW~!!! Today... oh, today we got a super-awesome guest who just came back from America! That's right, America! The land of the free! The bald eagle! Las Vegas! New York! Albuquerque! In fact, our guest isn't just any ol' returnee. If you want that, you just missed us interview someone like that last week... man, they really were obsessed with the turn right on red traffic rule they discovered in their time from America, huh? Geez...
...anyways, no. This isn't just some ordinary person. It's Ryoko Maruyama! Young racing superstar! But... Ryoko-san, I have to ask. What are you doing over there in America?! Why not race in Japan? Or maybe you just think it's above you?! Haha, just joking!
Ryoko: *laughs* No, not at all! Thank you for having me today, by the way.
Daisuke: It is... my! *crash!* Absolute! *scream!* Pleasure! *cash register sound*
Ryoko: Well! At the time I was looking for a way up the ladder. It's really hard to get into a good program for development here with all the competition, especially now that they are not only sourcing their talent from mountain racing but now eSports.
Daisuke: eSports?! Gosh, I wish I could have been a professional athlete when I spent my free time as a young'un wasting away at the arcade! *laugh track*
Ryoko: But as they say, America is the land of opportunity, and I actually had an offer from Pavoni to join their development program. They were combing through international talent and I got lucky that they were scouting a few of my races when I was in the junior formulas. Fast forward a year or so and I'm making a bit of headway in that scene.
Daisuke: Pavoni... what a mafioso sounding name! Ryoko, you aren't involved in the Italian mafia, are you?! *gasp sound effect*
Ryoko: Ahaha, no, no! They're a legitimate racing team, in fact one of the strongest teams in Lightning Car. I got to test a Lightning Car a few times during my development years, but I never got to find a time where I could move up. Then I got a call from this woman named Nina Bridgehampton looking to see if I would like to drive sports cars for a couple of years. What a great team they made up -- every staff member is a woman, even down to the janitor. She's really dedicated to her cause.
Daisuke: So, are the race queens... the race kings? If it's all women doing the work, then the men gotta strut their stuff! Huh? What's that...? *inaudible whispering, most likely telling Daisuke off for his dated views*
Ryoko: They don't do that kind of thing over there, but we did actually do a photo shoot before the 2021 season where we dressed like race queens. Apparently Nina thought it would help us gain some publicity. It worked, even if it was a bit of an off the wall idea.
Daisuke: This Nina woman sounds like a real piece of work!
Ryoko: She just likes having a lot of fun! Do you remember when PARSEC did a lot of modelling work with their own drivers? She was inspired by that and didn't want to be left in the dust. Says we made up a good amount in merchandising too and the royalties we both collected were pretty substantial.
Daisuke: Now I GOTTA import myself that calendar! *laugh track*
Ryoko: Look what I brought you for today, actually...
Daisuke: Is this... ooooh... ooooooooh! It is! Thank you Ryoko, I'll gladly hang this up and have my wife tell me off! *police siren* *laugh track*
Ryoko: Anyways, we did win the 2021 IMAS championship alongside my teammate Risa! It was a real rollercoaster, but it all was worth it in the end. The final round at Sebring was probably one of the most stressful races I've ever done in my career. Our car was really having issues with the electronic damper system and it made it an absolute chore to drive around. My crew chief kept me updated on the position of the car were were battling for the championship, and once we heard that they ran into some issues so much relief ran through my body. I think I lost a few kilos in body weight from that anxiety alone!
Daisuke: You know why? Because I was on a tower with a sniper rifle ready to aim at your rivals! Wa-pow! *gun shot noise* *laugh track*
Ryoko: I think Risa got pretty drunk after the celebrations; I saw her chug that whole bottle of champagne they give us during the presentation. In fact she always kind of does that whenever they have podium ceremonies. She always ends up hitting on me and telling me how cute I'd look in a maid outfit.
Daisuke: HAHA! Sounds like my type of gal!
Ryoko: So that night she decided to make up a whole huge surprise. Once we all got back to the truck there was my boss holding up a whole maid outfit!!! You can look up pictures on Tripwire of me having to walk around the paddock in it... I... don't think that's one of my proudest moments.
Daisuke: Your team sounds like a whale of a time! Now, Ryoko... I think a few listeners do want to get on the line and ask you a few questions, so let's pick out a lucky sucker and see what they have to say. Hello! You're on the Daily Dropkick!
Caller: Yo! Daisuke! Love the show! Wa-pow!
Daisuke: Aw, I love you too, man. Wa-pow! to you too! What's your name?
Akio: It's Akio, yo. Okay, so, like, Ryoko is a pretty awesome driver. I've been following her since like, she was like, super young. Like, super small. Smaller than she is right now! Crazy. I know. Okay, so... uh, like, Ryoko! What happened between you and Marisa that one day after that one race? Like, that one race! You know what I'm talking about! You get up in Marisa's face and you start saying something about her moving on you, but then she says that you chopped her nose off. Then she grabs your hair and like twirls you around the whole damn garage! Did you ever get her back for that, or are you two like, cool cool now? 'cause I like you both, dog. You're super cool and chill and like, the ice woman. But Marisa is like... like hot fire! So like, it would be super cool if you two would like, maybe re-enact the fight or team up one day to just sort of call back to that.
Ryoko: I... don't think I want to re-enact any fights, to be honest. But I will say that Marisa is a pretty good driver. Sure, she did something pretty questionable that day but I think we both realize that we messed up. I haven't really talked to her but I do see her on trueRacing sometimes. I don't know though, sometimes she likes to give me a few love taps when we do share the same virtual track. Whatever her deal is I don't know but I don't really hold anything against her.
Daisuke: Ooooh, a good rivalry! It's too bad you two don't race against each other in real life!
Ryoko: Maybe one day! Who knows! I know that a former colleague Noire Tremblant will be racing with her next season, so we'll have to see if I can get along to her that way. Thanks for making me remember that day though! *laugh* I'm pretty sure I didn't get spun around the whole garage though, I put up a pretty damn good fight!
Daisuke: Thank you thank you thank you for calling! Now, next caller, you're up!
Harumi: Haihai~! It's Harumi here, I looooooooooooove your show Daisuke, and I love Ryoko too! My question is, if you couldn't be in racing for whatever reason, what would you be doing right now? It's a bit of a plain question, I knoooooooooooooow, but we really don't get to hear about anything from you other than well... uh, racing, and uh... sim racing?
Ryoko: Racing is in my blood I guess. *awkward giggle* But if I couldn't race, then maybe I would play softball. I can hit some pretty good dingers, I promise! Maybe that, or I could just be a racing photographer. I always wonder how those people get such pretty shots.
Daisuke: Your strike zone must be pretty small! *laugh track*
Ryoko: Hey!
Daisuke: Joking, joking! Don't look at me like that! Alriiiiiiight~! That's all for the show today~! Wa-pow! Thank you Ryoko for getting on the air!
Ryoko: Of course!
Daisuke: Ryoko will be having an autograph session at 5 at the AutoModificata Motoring Lifestyle location in the Tuner Village district, so be sure to catch her if you can! I unfortunately won't be there, so don't count on getting any autographs from me! Haha! Now, time for the Clara Crescendo marathon! Don't touch that dial!
